About the Authors


Maddie Capron (2018)

Maddie is a senior at Ohio University studying journalism and political science. She is the managing editor at The Post, the independent student media outlet covering OU and Athens, and the immediate past president and programming chairwoman of the campus chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. This coming academic year, Maddie will be pursuing departmental honors in political science by completing a thesis about the relationship between the changes in the media industry and political participation.


Maggie Campbell (2018)

Maggie Campbell is a junior in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and is originally from Oakton, Virginia. Maggie is the president of Ohio University’s chapter of Society of Professional Journalists. She is also the education writer, a copy editor and a social media contributor for The Post. Maggie has previously worked as a Junior Faculty Advisor at the Washington Journalism and Media Conference and an intern at RVA Mag in Richmond, Va.


Julie Ciotola (2018)

Julie is a junior at the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and the editor-in-chief of Backdropa student-produced lifestyle magazine at Ohio University.  She is also a student writer for Ohio University’s alumni magazines, Ohio Today and Ohio WomenJulie enjoys long-form feature writing and wants to work for a magazine or large newspaper after graduation.

Lauren Fisher (2018)

Lauren is a senior at the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and the editor-in-chief of The Post. She previously served as the outlet’s assistant news editor and has a special place in her heart for higher education reporting. Lauren is especially interested in reporting on rural Appalachia and the national opioid epidemic and hopes to use the knowledge gained during the Ohio-Leipzig exchange to better understand the science behind addiction. Most recently, she interned with the Ohio Center for Investigative Journalism, and after graduation, wants to pursue a career in the online news industry or at a large daily newspaper.


Winnie Lee (2018)

Winnie Lee is a junior from Chicago, Illinois, majoring in forensic chemistry. Her research is in the analytical chemistry department. Lee is working with Pete Harrington on near-infrared spectroscopy, which examines the absorption of electromagnetic wavelengths in the near-infrared range. She is working with carbon-acid mixtures.


ashtonAshton Nichols (2018)

Ashton is a sophomore at the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism and a senior writer for The Post. She enjoys business and economics writing, along with long-form investigative work. Ashton also enjoys photography and videography. After graduation, she wants to write and produce work for a media company.





Ceara O’Connor

Ceara O’Connor is a senior chemistry major from Cleveland, Ohio. Her recent research is with Michael Held and the university’s biochemistry department. She and his group are looking at proteins in plant cell walls and using CRISPR cuts in generations of tomato and arabidopsis plants grown in the lab to extract and sequence genetic materials from them. CRISPR stands for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats , a new process used for genome editing. O’Connor wants to continue in this research. She has won an award in the sport of fencing.
